Spring course conditions: what to expect in April and May

Our grounds team walks through how the zoysia is coming out of dormancy, what the greens are rolling like, and when to tee it up.

Spring is the most talked-about season for golfers in Virginia, and for good reason. The zoysia on our fairways comes out of dormancy slowly — typically beginning in mid-April — and the transition from tan to the rich zoysia green is one of the most beautiful things you'll see on the course.

This year we overseeded with a blend of annual rye through early March, so the fairways are playable now even as the zoysia wakes up underneath. Greens are rolling at 10 on the stimpmeter this week and will climb to 11–12 by Memorial Day.

If you're planning to bring out-of-town guests, late April through mid-May is the sweet spot: firm fairways, fast greens, dogwoods in bloom around 11 tee, and the mountains still with a touch of snow at the peaks.

See you on the tee.
